UCSB Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity

On-Going Education:

Workshops on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex community

The RCSGD offers educational workshops to groups, offices, organizations, and departments at UCSB. The campus environment is not always positive for community members who are not heterosexual or who do not conform to society’s expectations of gender. As a unified campus we aim to make UCSB a safer and more welcoming place for all diversities of gender and sexuality.

Workshops can be scheduled by contacting the RCSGD/LGBT Resources at 805-893-5847 or joshua.moonjohnson@sa.ucsb.edu

Safe Zone Part I and II

Safe Zone training provides basic information and discussion on issues LGBTQI community members might face as well as how individuals can best advocate for this population. The sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes and can be divided into two parts. The extended versions allow more time for reflection, group discussion, and action planning.

Safe Zone - Intersex

Safe Zone-Intersex is a follow up workshop to the basic Safe Zone training and provides more details about people with intersex conditions as well as effective ways to support the community as an individual and as an institution. The Safe Zone-Intersex is 45-60 minutes in length.

Safe Zone - Transgender

Safe Zone-Transgender is a follow up workshop to the basic Safe Zone training and provides more details about transgender communities as well as effective ways to support the community as an individual and as an institution. Although campus climate has been improving for the LGBTQI community as a whole, transgender people still face far more hate, discrimination, and exclusion than other groups within the LGBTQI community. The Safe Zone-Transgender workshop is 45-60 minutes in length.

Intervening as a Friend

Unfortunately hate crimes, hate incidents, and bias related incidents still occur often at UCSB and those affected the most are often LGBTQI people. The Bystander Intervention workshop provides people the basic skills necessary to intervene in a situation and/or respond to a survivor of an incident. The Bystander Intervention workshops can be 60-90 minutes in length and include basic knowledge, discussion, case studies, and applications.

Other Workshop Topics Include:

  • Queer Students of Color
  • Religion and Sexual Orientation
